Unbelieveable Found poem by Amy Helenek, using quotes from The Last Days and Maus I
The sadism, The cruelty, The irrationality Is beyond words
Taking young jew infants Ripping them in half “We didn’t believe them.” “Impossible.”
It wasn’t normal anymore
“This one’s too old, over 50” Our eyes locked Tears rolling down his cheek That was the last time I saw my father
This is a madman’s hell Rotting in those tents I don’t want to live Weak probably isn’t even the right term
I see them all dead What’s going on? Something is wrong with me My mind is going.
I couldn’t be seeing this.
Shot on the spot The inhumanity of man against man There, we promised we would die for each other We couldn’t keep that promise
They took my identity My parents My siblings My possessions
They aren’t going to take my soul
This poem is about the reality, or truly insanity, that happened during the holocaust. How all of the events that happened seemed like they were nightmares, or illusions. They experienced what was so drastically insane that some wanted to just escape it and die right away, instead of being tortured like the other jewish people there. It tested peoples courage, and bravery as well as faith in the messed up world of Nazi Germany and Nazi Austria.
